Need a Camera

Okay blog readers - I need some knowledge/advice. Our dearest point and shoot camera was left somewhere and was not returned. So, we are in the process of saving up and researching a new camera.

If you have a digital SLR camera, I need you to tell me why it is/isn't the way to go. Also, please tell me which one you have and why you like it.

If you have a point and shoot - what do you have? Do you like it?

We were able to use my Dad's Nikon D60 while home, and it DOES seem there is a difference in quality.

Thanks for the help!

I think it comes down to what you want and need from your camera. How do you gauge that?

1) Do you consider yourself a photographer (pro or amature) or just want nice pictures? If you just want nice pictures, stick with a point and shoot.
2) Most importantly, did you understand and use all the features on your point and shoot camera? If no, then you probably should not have a more advanced SLR. Most point and shoot cameras have quite a few pre-sets which optimize picture quality based on the situation.
3) If yes to #2, then did you feel restrained by your point and shoot? If no, then stay with a point and shoot.

I have a point and shoot camera. I don't pass question 2 so I feel like I don't deserve an SLR.

Hope that helps your decision process.

So sorry about your camera. My input is that I was so impressed with your camera that we bought one when Costco put them on sale. Can hardly wait to see all of you in a month. nannie

Thanks, Greg! Good logical thoughts.

Thanks, Nannie, too :) It's good to know that you liked the picture quality of our former camera.

Jeff just got me a canon 880 i.s, and we are really enjoying it. It shoots wider than a lot of other point and shoots which is always fun. It also does video and is 10 mpx. The image quality is nice as well... I think unless you want to invest in some lenses the image quality may be a bit comparable to a stock lens on an SLR. The one thing an SLR has on the point and shoot is speed.... You can do about three frames per second with an SLR vs. one frame per second with a point and shoot.... Good luck!

We have a sony cybershot. It is a few years old but we really like it. It takes great basic pictures and does up to a few minute videos too.

Hey guys-
Well I have a Nikon D80 and I just recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix ZS3 (I think Costco carries the ZS1). I really enjoy both my cameras but they are also used differently. My Nikon does take GREAT pics-BUT the lens is the bigger deal than the body. So, know that if you go the SLR way you are going to want to invest in 1 or 2 nice lenses (at least:)) to really make it worth it. You will get a different quality and have more manual control.
I did research a LOT before I bought a point and shoot and the Panasonic kept coming up on top with the Canon 790 and Sony Cybershot so I went down to a camera shop and looked at them (after I had ordered the ZS3 b/c no one had them in stock). For me the zs3 was better hands down. It is slightly bigger but the picture quality (esp in low light) and the hd video (both in mpeg and the AVCHD Lite-which takes less memory) is great. I have had it for a little over a month and have been very happy. But it stays in my purse for those random shots and day trips where my SLR comes out for portraits, scenery, indoor, etc.)
It depends what you will use the most and how much $$$ you have:). The Panasonic was a bit more than the others but it my mind well worth it. You might also see if you can find an SLR used and go that route.
Hope that helps:)

oh and the Panasonic has a 12x optical zoom (plus more digital)and a 25mm wide angle ---you will need to research a bit online and see what meets your needs the best. and dpreview and ...there are a handful of really helpful sites out there- even reading what people rate certain cameras on, etc
have Fun!!!!
